Intikhab Alam played 41 Test matches and 4 ODIs for Pakistan from 1959 to 1977. Picked as captain in 1969, Alam’s reign lasted for 6 years, coming to an end in 1975.

During Intikhab’s tenure as captain, Pakistan managed to win only one match and draw 11 out of the 17 played. Intikhab was considered to be too diplomatic for the position and Pakistan then opted for a proactive and aggressive skipper in the name of Majid Khan.

In the side, Intikhab brought valuable experience from the English County Cricket and helped Pakistan draw, if not win, series against England, Australia, West Indies, and New Zealand.

Alam (51) was also part of a 190-run 9th wicket stand with Asif Iqbal (146) that held the World record for 31 years.

Intikhab Alam was also Pakistan’s first ODI captain, winning two of the three games played. He went on to become the Manager of the 1992 World Cup winning Pakistan team, and the 2009 T20I World Cup winning team.
